The layout of a dangerous road junction near Pembroke where two people have died is to be reviewed by transport bosses.

Simon Hart MP has welcomed the news that South Wales Trunk Roads Agency (SWTRA) is to look again at the safety of the Nash Fingerpost junction – the turning for Pembroke off the A477.

"Everyone knows how dangerous this junction is, especially if you are coming from Pembroke and turning right across the traffic to go towards Carew," said Mr Hart.

"There is a refuge island in the middle of the road but apparently this is a "ghost refuge" and is only supposed to be used by cars travelling from Pembroke Dock towards Carew who want to turn right to Pembroke. If you are turning across the traffic to go from Pembroke to Carew then you are supposed to make the manoeuvre in one go but it just isn't possible as it's such a busy road – you'd be waiting there all day."

Mr Hart has lobbied the Welsh Assembly Government on behalf of worried local residents and the Welsh Transport Minister Carl Sergeant has told him that he has instructed the SWTRA to undertake an "assessment of the performance of the junction"

"He has also asked them to look into the relevant accident statistics to see whether any adjustments are needed," added Mr Hart.

"I appreciate that this junction has been designed in accordance with all the design manuals but in reality it is dangerous - particularly for HGVs and long vehicles turning right across the road. I sincerely hope that this review results in a safer junction."
