Youngsters Urged To Enter Parliamentary Film Competition

Simon Hart MP is pictured with the Lights, Camera, Parliament! action pack which he has sent to every secondary school in his constituency with an aim to encouraging youngsters to make a three minute film arguing the case for creating a new law.If you could make any new law what would it be? A tax on sugar? Scrapping the Severn Crossing toll?

Local MP Simon Hart is calling on Carmarthenshire students to get their thinking caps on and imagine what new legislation they would pass if they could.

He's encouraging youngsters in the county to think up an idea and then get engaged in the democratic process by entering a Parliamentary film competition setting out their argument.

The Lights, Camera, Parliament! competition aims at getting 11 to 16-year-olds 16 to make a three minute film telling Parliament what law they would make.

Mr Hart has now sent an entry pack to every secondary school in his constituency encouraging them to take part.

"This is an excellent project that really brings politics alive. If you had the chance what law would you bring in? Free school dinners for all? Giving 16 year olds the vote? One of last year's finalists argued that duelling should be legalised!

"The information pack is an excellent resource and I sincerely hope that Carmarthenshire schools will consider taking part."

The popular competition now in its second year has seen previous entrants propose a wide range of legislation including banning size zero models and raising the minimum age of armed forces entry to 21.

Each year the six finalists are invited into Parliament to present their ideas to a judging panel of MPs and Peers and industry professionals.

Finalists will also have their films screened as part of the Cultural Olympiad project "Arts in Parliament" in Westminster Hall this summer. Winning teams are supported in their future projects by receiving film making equipment and a visit to Pinewood Studios.

The closing date for entrants is 26 March 2012 with shortlisted candidates announced in May.
