A Whitland pub landlady has launched a bid to get everyone in her town on line.
Sue Adams of The Station House Hotel has become a local digital champion after reading about Race for 2012 – a Government campaign aimed at getting everyone on line by the end of next year.
"I read about this scheme that aims to get everyone on line and the help that is available to people to buy laptops and to get trained to teach people how to use the internet," she explained.
"The aim is to get everyone in Whitland on line – especially the silver surfers."
She's now being backed by local MP Simon Hart in her bid to get the town on line.
"The plan to get the nine million people in the UK who've never used the internet on line is a very ambitious one and it relies on energetic people like Sue to step in to make it happen," he said.
"The figures show that of those who aren't connected to the internet, almost half are in the lowest income bracket. We also know that rural and coastal towns have the highest number of older people who aren't connected so Sue's bid to reach out to the town's pensioners really important."
The Race for 2012 campaign has persuaded Microsoft to provide recycled computers for £95 and the scheme also provides a dongle for internet access at £10 a month.
Sue added: "I've just got my 69-year-old mum in Bristol up and running thanks to the scheme.
"She was terrified she was going to break something or cause World War Three at first but now she can Skype her aunt in America and check her benefits on line, it's great."
Sue's now holding an Open Day at the Station House Hotel between 9am and 9pm on June 21st to tell people more about the benefits of being on line.
She added: "I've got about 12 people already interested in signing up and my ultimate aim is to get an internet cafe in Whitland, as the slogan says; We are all better off when we're all on line."
Mr Hart added: "It is only with the help of a network of local champions like Sue that this dream of getting everyone online can become a reality.
"If you want to help get everyone in Carmarthenshire online then please check out this scheme."
