Pembrokeshire’s Tourism Industry Boosted By Bank Holiday Plans

Plans to lengthen the holiday season by moving a Bank Holiday have been welcomed by local MP Simon Hart.

Mr Hart believes the plan to move the early May Day bank holiday to either St David's Day or a day in October will boost the all-important "shoulder season" for local tourism operators.

"At the moment all our bank holidays come very close together, especially when Easter is as late as it is this year," said Mr Hart, "even without the Royal Wedding Bank Holiday we still have four days off in just over five weeks this Spring.

"If we were to move one of the long weekends to either Spring or Autumn it would help to lengthen the season and increase revenue all round."

The Bank Holiday proposals are outlined in the Government's Tourism Strategy which will cut red tape, free up local businesses, and re-establish the tourism industry as a key priority for restoring the UK economy.

The strategy will generate four million overseas visitors over the next four years, bringing an extra £2 billion worth of visitor spend in to the country and creating 50,000 new jobs.
