Simon Hart MP has visited the Living Memory Group at Narberth Museum to learn more about their valuable work within the community.
He is pictured chatting with founder Mary Adams, Past President of Narberth Rotary Club, who set up the group last March, during her Presidential Year.
The group aims to help people with continuing healthcare needs who have become socially isolated within the community. Originally it was set up as a Dementia Friendly Café but it was decided to widen the criteria to reach anyone who has become socially isolated because of health issues.
"What a brilliant idea this group is," said Mr Hart. "The museum is a perfect setting with its own café and is full of memorabilia to remind people of past times."
Mr Hart joined in a singalong session led by members of Whitland Male Voice Choir and enjoyed by Living Memory Group regulars from Bloomfield Day Centre, Castleview Residential Home in Llawhaden and people who need socialisation within Pembrokeshire.
Mrs Adams has been presented with a prestigious Rotarian honour – a Paul Harris Fellowship – partly for her work setting up the group and has also been nominated for a Champion of Change Rotary Award at the Senedd.
"I wanted to start a group down here because Rotary has been involved in setting up such meetings all over the UK," she explained.
"We have different activities – The Rotakids Children from Narberth School come to the group once a month and run the session providing intergenerational stimulation for the group.
"What has been particularly pleasing is seeing that the group has provided a support group for carers to share experiences whilst enjoying a cuppa at the Museum."
The group meets twice a month on a Friday at 1:30pm in Narberth Museum. One of the sessions is a singalong session and the other is a session with the Narberth Rotakids.
The aim of the group is to stimulate, socialise and make new friends whilst having fun.
"It is a really good way of overcoming loneliness for carers and those suffering from health problems, we are always happy to take more clients so please call the museum on 01834 860500 if you want to know more" added Mrs Adams.
