CARING KIDS HAND OVER CAR FULL OF TOYS AND MP RAISES CHARITY'S CONCERNS IN WESTMINSTER

Pupils and parents from Pembroke School have been collecting toys for local charity Pembrokeshire Action To Combat Hardship (PATCH)'s Christmas appeal.

It's the first time that the school has taken part in the PATCH Christmas appeal and a car full of toys was collected and handed over with the help of PATCH supporter, local MP Simon Hart.

PATCH co-ordinator Tracy Olin said: "So far we have had 450 children referred to us to receive a Christmas gift and this donation is a tremendous boost.

"We'd like to say a huge thanks to Pembroke School as this was a great result for the first time they've helped us and I'd also like to thank Simon Hart for all his support."

Following Mr Hart's meeting with PATCH he raised their concerns regarding rent payments with the Work and Pensions Minister Ian Duncan Smith in Parliament this week.

"PATCH is particularly worried about changes to housing component of Universal Credit which will see rent paid directly to tenants instead of their landlords and fear that "vulnerable tenants" won't cope as they have trouble managing their money and budgeting," he explained.

Mr Duncan Smith replied: "Vulnerable tenants will be defined as they always have been, as people who for various specific reasons are unable to cope. By ensuring that we identify those who have difficulties, we can get to them and sort out their problems rather than just dealing with the symptoms, such as their being unable to make their payments.

"We need to deal with why they are in debt, what is happening to their families and whether, say, the family is drug addicted and start to put those problems right before they crash out of work later on."
